Do Christians Ever Face Doubt?

Steve Reeves

Steve Reeves | Lead Pastor at Connection Pointe

According to the latest research by The Barna Group, "... MOST Christians have at some point experienced a time of spiritual doubt." Barna also revealed the most common responses to doubt and where Christians turn to make it through with their faith intact.

1. How prevalent is doubt?

65% of self-identified Christians question, or have questioned, their belief about God or the Church. In fact, even 19% of DEVOTED Christians still experience doubt. Millennials experience twice as much doubt as any other generational group.

2. What is the response to doubt?

The most common response of those with spiritual doubt is to leave their church (45%).  29% stop reading the Bible and praying. Surprisingly, 39% did not change anything, even though they experienced spiritual doubt.

3. What are the consequences of doubt?

The encouraging news is that spiritual doubt can actually STRENGTHEN faith! The research revealed that 53% believe the time spent asking honest questions about their faith, actually made their faith stronger. Devoted groups overwhelmingly said experiencing spiritual doubt IMPROVED their faith (95%). For those who do NOT have the support of a Church community, doubt can take its toll. Only 34% of those who did not attend church said their faith had been reinforced as a result of their doubt. Those who were unchurched LOST their faith (20%). The obvious message is that relationships provide the emotional and spiritual support necessary to become STRONGER for having experienced doubt.

4. What does this research mean?

For the majority of Christians, doubt is inevitable at some point, but it IS a catalyst to spiritual growth.

That is one of the reasons I believe the Holy Spirit guided the Apostle Paul, in Ephesians 2, to write about, "... (God's) ... mysterious plan..." Christians have wrestled with the mystery of faith, ever since the first century.

So... Our study this weekend is designed to equip Christians, so we can help our friends and families GROW through their seasons of doubt. Please bring your Bible and a guest Saturday or Sunday. We will learn how vital it is to STAY connected to Christ and His Church, we will unfold God's mysterious plan and we will see and hear a MIRACULOUS CP story of salvation in Christ that occurred because a wife maintained her faith in Christ and faithfully prayed for her husband ... for 30 years!!!

I cannot wait to greet you and your guests!
