Harmony - 3 Year Plan and Schedule
We recognize there is something unique and congregationaly engaging when the stage is full of worshippers. Harmony will be an opportunity to invite people to the team who want to use their musical gifts without the commitment level that is required of other positions on the worship team. It will also serve as an introduction to the worship team for vocalists, with possible potential to serve on a deeper level of commitment and service.
Harmony will be a multi-generational (SAT) worship choir that seeks to worship authentically in a way that encourages congregants to fully engage with the Lord during the weekend experience.
Harmony will NOT be a show choir, a “special numbers” choir, a “Pageant” choir and so on. Because we value congregational singing, these types of songs do no typically foster congregational singing. We will not do performance pieces, unless they are strategic and intentional.
Harmony will be open to middle schoolers up through adults. No audition will be necessary for those who will sing primarily in the Center beyond a “get to know you” meeting for new team members. Harmony will be an expectation of our current worship team vocalists, but not mandatory. The current vocal team members will be the heart of the choir, providing core musical, spiritual and relational leadership.
On the dates that Harmony is scheduled to sing, and the 2 weeks prior, Harmony will rehearse on Wednesday night from 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm to prepare for services. Every service opportunity will have at least 2 rehearsals. The songs will be distributed well in advance via the quarterly song book or at the frst rehearsal for each performance date. These songs will be available through Planning Center Online where everyone can access the material to look at, listen to and learn the songs. The rehearsals will not be primarily music teaching times, they will be a time to put together what has been previously prepared at home.
2017 will be the experimental year for Harmony. We will sing for Easter, Christmas and three Nights of Prayer and Worship that are scheduled on February 22, May 3, and October 11. For each of these dates, we will have at least 2 rehearsals prior to the event(s). In 2018, if all goes well and Harmony seems to be gaining momentum, we will sing in services once every other month, at least 6 times within the year, not including Nights of Prayer and Worship, and other opportunities that may come along. Again, if momentum continues, we will look at possibly increasing the number of dates we sing in 2019.
The Importance of Consistency
Because of the size of our church and the size of our main venue, we will need to maintain a semi-constant choir presence of 25-30 people for the services in which we sing to justify the resources allocated to this project. If we consistently drop below this threshold, we will re-evaluate the viability of this service opportunity. My hope is that this understanding will encourage those who are passionate about choir, will be the chief recruiters, promoters and champions for this endeavor.
