Holidaze

Right off the bat, you should know that I have strong feelings about misusing the letter “z” in words, but I think that "holidazed" is an appropriate word for how many people will feel during and after the next two months – with all the school programs and gatherings with family and friends. These good times will produce wonderful memories. But, if we aren't careful, they also could take away some of the joy and magic of this special time of year.

This particular holiday season will be a little crazier for us because our little family is moving. Our new home is just a few miles away, however, moving is never a small task. As we approach the big day and the holidays, I've decided that this is the year to simplify. To fight feeling frazzled, task-driven and overwhelmed and enjoy this season with the people I love.

Our Christmas morning won't look like a page out of The Magnolia Journal, and that's just fine by me. We won't be 100% “perfectly” settled in our new home by Christmas, and I'm actually excited about that and the memories we'll make. These words from Present Over Perfect have helped me put the coming season into perspective, and I hope they can help you to simplify expectations and calendars so you can truly enjoy this holiday season.

Present over perfect.

Quality over quantity.

Relationship over rushing.

People over pressure.

Meaning over mania.

Those words serve as reminders to all of us as we approach Thanksgiving, Christmas -- and let's be honest, every other day of the year.

Before your family joins you for Thanksgiving, before you travel to your in-laws for Christmas, before you start feeling out of control trying to keep up with all of the commitments and traditions -- remember to leave room for rest, connection, grace (for yourself and others), presence and peace. If you do, you may just find yourself feeling a bit less “holidazed” this year.
